What an opposition means
An opposition splits the zodiac circle in half. The two planets usually sit in opposite signs, such as Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, or Cancer and Capricorn. These pairs share a modality and match complementary elements, fire with air and earth with water. Each sign has what the other lacks: Aries knows how to act alone, and Libra knows how to act with someone.
In life, an opposition often feels like a tug-of-war between two ends of a spectrum. You may swing from one to the other, or identify with one side and meet the other through the people around you. The houses involved form an axis too, such as the 1st and 7th (self and partnership) or the 4th and 10th (home and career).
How an opposition feels, with examples
Sun opposite Moon means you were born near a full moon. What you want to become and what you need to feel safe may point in different directions, and much of your growth comes from letting them negotiate. Venus opposite Pluto brings intensity to love and attachment; relationships can feel all-consuming, and you may keep meeting strong, private people.
Mars opposite Saturn can feel like the gas and the brake pressed together, with action meeting hesitation, especially around authority. Mercury opposite Jupiter pairs detail with the big picture, so conversations can swing between hard facts and grand ideas.
Working with an opposition
Oppositions are the most relational aspect. Because the two planets face each other, one side is often easier to see in others than in yourself. If someone keeps playing the role you resist—too controlling, too carefree—they may be showing you a planet you haven’t fully claimed. The work is integration: borrowing a little from each end. With Mars opposite Saturn, that might mean acting with a plan instead of either rushing or freezing.
The signs involved can guide you. Every opposition joins two signs of the same modality, so the two sides already share a way of operating. A Taurus–Scorpio opposition, both fixed signs, is about holding on: comfort on one side, depth on the other. A Gemini–Sagittarius opposition, both mutable, is about learning: gathering facts on one side, finding meaning on the other.
Orb, planets and strength
CAZIMI counts an opposition within 5° of exact. A tight opposition tends to feel like a defining, lifelong balancing act; a wider one is a polarity you notice mainly under stress.
Oppositions between personal planets show up in daily choices and relationships. When an outer planet opposes a personal one, a larger, generational force can seem to arrive from outside, through events or other people. Oppositions that fall near the angles of the chart, such as a planet close to the 7th house cusp, directly across from your rising degree, are especially noticeable in close relationships.
Questions people ask
Is an opposition aspect bad?
No. An opposition is a tension aspect, but its purpose is balance, not conflict for its own sake. It shows two needs that both deserve room. People with strong oppositions often become good at seeing multiple perspectives, negotiating and understanding others, because they have practiced it inside themselves first.
What does Sun opposite Moon mean?
It means you were born close to a full moon, with the Sun and Moon in opposite signs. Your conscious goals and emotional needs can feel pulled apart, and relationships often become the place where you work this out. When the two sides cooperate, the result is a rare ability to see both sides of a situation.
How do you balance an opposition in your chart?
Start by naming both planets and what each one needs. Then notice whether you favor one side and hand the other to people around you. Balance usually comes from small acts of including the neglected side, like rest for a driven Mars or action for a cautious Saturn, rather than swinging all the way across.
