What is a moon sign?
If your sun sign is the self you’re growing into, your moon sign is the self you come home to. It shows your instinctive reactions, your emotional needs and the kind of care that actually reaches you.
People often recognize their moon sign most in private: in what they do when they’re tired or upset, in what they reach for to feel better, and in how they look after the people they love.
How it’s calculated
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in a birth chart. It travels about 13 degrees a day and changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so your birth date already narrows it down to one sign, sometimes two.
If the Moon changed signs on your birth date, your birth time determines which sign applies. An unknown-time result comes from an assumed time; this tool does not compare all possible times that day. Check your recorded time before treating it as confirmed. Recognizing yourself in a description is not a way to choose between signs.
Moon sign vs sun sign
Your sun sign describes your will and direction. Your moon sign describes your needs. When the two are in harmony, what you want and what you need line up easily. When they pull in different directions — say, an Aries sun with a Cancer moon — you may want to charge ahead while also needing safety, and learning to honor both becomes part of your story.
Using your moon sign day to day
Treat your moon sign as a care guide. A Taurus moon settles with routine and good food; a Gemini moon needs to talk it through; a Capricorn moon calms down by getting something done. Knowing yours makes it easier to ask for what you need, and to give the people around you what they need too.
